Why Family Travel is Like Herding Cats: Tales from Lake Balaton

As a family travel writer, I’ve been asked countless times about the best ways to plan a successful family vacation. I’ve learned that no matter how much planning and preparation you do, family travel can feel a lot like herding cats. This is especially true when traveling with young children. The truth is, while family travel can be a crazy and unpredictable experience, it’s also one of the most rewarding and memorable things you can do together.

One of my most memorable family travel experiences happened a few years ago when we headed to Lake Balaton in Hungary. We had been planning this trip for months, and we were all looking forward to exploring the scenic lake and surrounding areas. We had our itinerary all mapped out, but as soon as we arrived, things started to unravel.

First off, we missed our connecting flight, which meant we had to spend an unexpected night in a hotel. The kids were cranky, and we were all exhausted. The next day, we finally made it to Lake Balaton, but it was raining cats and dogs. Our plans to rent bikes and cycle around the lake were out the window. Instead, we spent a rainy afternoon wandering around the town, trying to keep the kids entertained.

The next day, we woke up to sunny skies, and we were all set to make up for lost time. Our plan was to visit the nearby thermal baths, which we had read were a must-visit attraction. However, when we got there, we discovered that the baths were closed for maintenance. We were all disappointed, but we decided to make the most of it and head to the nearby playground. The kids had a blast, and we even managed to sneak in a quick coffee while they played.

Despite the setbacks, we still had an amazing time in Lake Balaton. We ended up exploring the local towns, trying new foods, and spending quality time together. While our plans didn’t go exactly as we had thought, we made the most of the unexpected moments and created memories that we’ll cherish forever.

The truth is, family travel is unpredictable, and things don’t always go according to plan. But, that’s what makes it so special. Embracing the unexpected and making the most of every moment is what family travel is all about. It’s about going with the flow and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

So, the next time you’re planning a family vacation and things don’t go according to plan, don’t stress. Embrace the unexpected and know that the memories you create along the way are far more important than any itinerary or plan. Remember, family travel is like herding cats, but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences you can have as a family.
